Raise your hand if you get frustrated with keyword research?
(C'mon be honest.)
Why is that?
Why is it when you want to find a simple keyword for a blog post, you're left stuck trying to figure out which keyword is the one you should choose?
Or you thought you picked the right keyword only to discover that Google ain't sending you any traffic yet other people are getting all the search engine glory?
Here's your reason: Because you're doing keyword research the same way as thousands of other people.
Worse is that you're competing on the same lame keywords.
Because you enter the same lame seed keywords.
And like thousands of other bloggers, you're probably using the Google Keyword Planner Tool to do all of your keyword research.
Like anything in life, if you want to stand out, you have to stop doing what everyone else is doing.
If your keyword approach and strategy is a carbon copy of what thousands of other bloggers are doing, you'll get lacklustre results....and you're search engine ranking will suffer.
What Are Some Unique and Unconventional Keyword Strategies You Can Use?
If you want more search engine traffic, you need to look for alternative ways to find solid keywords.
Look for the strategies that are working but no one is talking about and do those!
What are those strategies? Glad you asked.
Today, I want to introduce you to Long Tail Pro.
Long Tail Pro has been my keyword research weapon and tool of choice since 2013 and I use it to do all of my keyword reports.
When I first started offering keyword reports to clients, it used to take me over 15+ hours (sometimes 24 hours) to deliver just one report.
That's because the keyword research tools I were using at the time were slow, cumbersome and time-consuming.
Now it doesn't take me near as long to find relevant keywords that people can use to grow their businesses and to deliver these reports.
I want to give you an in-depth look inside of Long Tail Pro and explain why I believe this is the best keyword research tool on the planet.
Plus I'm launching a huge giveaway where you have a chance to WIN a 12-month subscription to Long Tail Pro Platinum, including access to Long Tail University.
The winner will also receive a single site license copy of Thrive Content Builder and a single site license of Thrive Leads.
I've launched this giveaway especially for people that struggle to find relevant keywords, come up with blog post ideas and want to do keyword research in less time.
Enter the giveaway: for a chance to win a FREE year of Long Tail Pro platinum edition, including access to Long Tail University PLUS a copy of Thrive Content Builder and Thrive Leads.
How Long Tail Pro Can Help You Capture More Search Engine Traffic
"Search engines are in love with long tail keywords," says Spencer Haws, the creator of Long Tail Pro.
"If you are able to provide relevant content targeting these long tail keywords, then you can see a dramatic increase to the amount of traffic Google and other search engines send you."
And I know that to be a fact.
Just yesterday, one of my keyword report clients Julie Parker informed me how one of her blog posts is still ranking on page 1 on Google after two years.
Long tail keyword: "life coaching books"
Global search volume per month: 390
Adwords value: $1.81
What you see in the screenshot above is the exact headline I provided to her in the keyword report.
If it wasn't for Long Tail Pro, I would never have found this keyword and Julie wouldn't have a page 1 ranking.
So what is Long Tail Pro?
Long Tail Pro is a powerful keyword research software that makes finding these valuable long tail keywords a breeze.
What's a "long tail keyword"?
Long tail keywords are the longer, more specific keywords that are less common, individually, but add up to account for the majority of search-driven traffic.
Long tail keywords are the opposite of “head” terms, which are more popular or more frequently searched on. For example, “fish tanks” is a head term, but “compare prices whisper aquarium filters” is a long-tail keyword.
Long tail keywords are “more descriptive phrases” and have less competition.
In other words, people are searching to find very specific things.
Rather than searching for “life coaching,” a user might search for “life coaching books," like you saw in the image above.
Or someone might search for: "how do you become a life coach.”
These are all examples of long tail keywords.
Long tail keywords are easier to rank for and are more specific and targeted. In addition, these keywords are usually buying keywords or keywords that advertisers are willing to pay for as indicated by the number of adverts below:
The best part about long tail keywords is that you can often rank for them without needing a lot of backlinks.
7 Benefits of Using Long Tail Pro
When I first started blogging, I was using Market Samurai to do most of my keyword research.
But like most other keyword tools, Market Samurai would only allow me to search for one seed keyword at a time.
So herein lies benefit number 1:
1. Long Tail Pro saves you time and finds you keywords faster than you thought possible
I can't emphasize this enough.
Long Tail Pro allows you to enter up to 10 seed keywords at a time and generate thousands of keywords.
As someone who can often deliver between 10 to 30 keyword reports every month, I can tell you that this one little feature will save you hours and hours of time.
By entering in 10 seed keywords at once, Long Tail Pro automatically becomes 10 times faster than other competing keyword research tool out there.
2. Find and filter keywords you only want to see
Long Tail Pro allows you to pre-set the filters for keywords you want to eliminate.
For example, if you only want to find keywords that have 500+ searches per month and a cost per click of $2 or more, the software will automatically filter those out for you.
And you can save your settings, so you only have to input this once.
Most other keyword tools only let you filter keywords after you generate them, which adds an extra step and more time since you can only run one keyword at once.
3. Analyze the current top 10 search results in Google
If you want a chance at ranking on page 1 of Google, then you need to determine whether you can outrank what's already ranking.
Doing this process manually is often hard to figure out and can take hours, especially when you're first starting out.
Long Tail Pro lets you quickly look at all the factors that you should be looking at to make a determination on the top 10 competitiveness. These factors include whether the keyword is in the title, URL, the domain authority, number of links, age of the domains, and much more.
One of the biggest time-saving features of the tool is the Keyword Competitiveness calculation.
All you do is simply click on a button next to your keyword and it calculates a Keyword Competitiveness (KC) Score between 1 and 100, which tells you how difficult it would be to rank in the top 10 for a given keyword.
Higher KC scores mean higher competition and are harder to rank. Lower KC scores mean lower competition and are easier to rank.
I usually avoid keywords with a KC score of more than 40.
4. Check where your site ranks in Google
Not only is Long Tail Pro an amazing keyword research tool, you can also check to see where your website ranks in Google, Yahoo and Bing on specific keywords.
Long Tail Pro eliminates personalized and localized results to allow you to accurately check your sites REALLY rank in Google.
5. Add your own keywords
Adding seed keywords and generating ideas through Long Tail Pro is one way to find keywords, but there are countless other ways too.
To uncover hidden keywords that most people never get to see, it's recommended that you get ideas from other free tools such as Quora, products and categories on Amazon, Google related and suggested searches, Kindle book titles and Uber Suggest to name a few.
Then import those keyword suggestions into Long Tail Pro. You can import up to 10,000 keywords into the tool.
Two More Ways to Find Keywords Your Competition Doesn't Know About
Keywords are THE most important part of SEO but most people go about keyword research the wrong way.
Thanks to Brian Dean of Backlinko, I discovered two more ways to find keywords most people don't dig around for.
Here's how to uncover more hidden keyword gems most people never get to see:
1. Seed Keywords - ask your audience what keywords they would use
Want to get deeper into the mindset of your target audience?
Now you can.
Have you ever thought to yourself what would people type into a search engine about X, Y, Z?
I do all the time.
Now you can ask people directly.
You're writing a blog post about how to get a cat to like you.
You go to optimize it and then you think: "wait, what would be the best keyword to use?"
Now often what you THINK people would search for is often very different from what people ACTUALLY search for.
Tools like The Google Keyword Planner have you enter a "seed keyword" into it.
Then it spits out suggestions based on your seed keyword. The problem is this:
You could end up using a seed keyword based on what you think you target customers use.
Now there's a tool that actually hands you a fresh batch of seed keywords.
It's called the Seed Keywords tool.
Here's how it works:
- Create a scenario (for example, "What would you search to get your cat to like you?" or "How would you find a red tennis racket online?")
- Send the scenario to target customers
- Collect the results
Instead of typing random keywords into the Google Keyword Planner, you find out what people actually search for.
Once you have your new seed keywords, enter them into Long Tail Pro to generate more keyword ideas.
2. Enter a URL into the “your landing page” field of the Google Keyword Planner Tool
When you enter a competitor's landing page into the "your landing page" field in the Google Keyword Planner tool, it's a great way to generate outside-the-box keyword ideas.
It's called the GKP hack.
Here's how it works:
- Head over to the Google Keyword Planner (GKP) tool
Click on the "search for new keywords and ad group ideas.” Instead of typing in a keyword in the "your product or service" field, enter a URL.
2. Enter a competitor’s landing page into the “your landing page” field
This can be a URL of a homepage, landing page, blog post or even a Pinterest page.
Then click on "get ideas."
The tool will then show you some creative long tail keywords that most people never see.
You can then download all those keyword ideas from the GKP tool and import them into Long Tail Pro.
6. Save and manage your favourite keywords
A recent addition that came with version 3.0 is the ability to save your favourite keywords so you never forget or lose a valuable keyword.
You can also take notes on how you may want to use the keyword and your ideas are all organized and accessible in your keyword management tool.
7. You don't need to be a SEO expert
The tool is so damn easy anyone can use Long Tail Pro.
On that note, let me show you how easy it really is to use.
Step-by-Step Guide on How To Use Long Tail Pro
Once you've downloaded the software onto your computer, follow these steps:
Open up Long Tail Pro, create a new project and give it a title:
Click on "Find Keywords."
Click in the box underneath "Add seed keywords’" and input a word or phrase related to your topic, industry or niche.
You can also add or import up to 10,000 keywords too (in addition to seed keywords).
Next, you want to add filters to make sure you only see results that are relevant.
Here, you can choose to only see longtail keywords that have a certain search volume (either locally or globally), you can choose how long the keyword phrase should be, and you can select what suggested bid value (or cost per click) of a keyword you want to see.
Select and click on the data that you want and click on “Generate Keywords & Fetch Data”:
Depending on how many filters you have put in place and how many keywords you want to find, it can take a few minutes for Long Tail Pro to process and get the information you need.
Here's a video Long Tail Pro made that steps you through this process:
Long Tail Pro will then generate a list of keywords along with the local and global search volume data:
Being faced with hundreds if not thousands of long tail keywords could be overwhelming to some people.
Long Tail Pro makes it easy to manage these results.
You can sort the keywords depending on the filter you choose.
For example, you can choose to see keywords that have a suggested bid value of more than $1 and a global search volume of more than 200.
You can also order the results using the columns. For example, you could also choose to see the results in order of search volume:
Another cool feature that's been added to version 3.0 is the ability to filter keywords by a letter or word.
In the screenshot below, I only want to see keywords that contain the word "daily." You do this by typing the word into "Filter by keyword" in the Keywords column:
Another cool feature of Long Tail Pro is the ability to find keywords according to the seed keyword you entered.
In the image below, we can see that there were 341 keywords generated from the "astrology charts" seed keyword.
I can then click to see those results:
To find out how competitive a keyword is, all you need to do is click on the "calculate" button, which will calculate the average keyword competitiveness (KC) score of each keyword:
The keywords with the lower scores are easier to rank for in the search results.
To learn more about keyword competitiveness, watch this video from the team at Long Tail Pro:
As with any digital marketing campaign, you should be tracking your progress.
Fortunately, Long Tail Pro lets you add and track all your keywords in one place.
Here’s how to set it up:
Enter a domain followed by the keywords you want to track. You can track as many keywords and domains as you like.
You may also want to select the country and language to track too. For example, Google USA, Google UK, Australia etc.
Long Tail Pro will then inform you where your site is is currently ranking on each of the three major search engines.
Check out this video from Long Tail Pro on how to use the Rank Tracker feature:
Finally, you can export the data from Long Tail Pro to a spreadsheet.
This is useful for people that wish to use their own spreadsheet to further analyse the results.
All you need to do is click on the icon on the top right of the screen:
